Public Liability Insurance
What is this?
Public liability insurance covers you for claims made against you by members of the public or other businesses, but not for claims by employees. Public liability insurance is generally voluntary.
Who is it for?
The nature of your business may expose customers, members of the public or other businesses to risk. Should one of these groups feel that your actions or inactions has caused them personal injury or damaged their property, they may choose to pursue redress through courts of law. Public liability insurance can meet the costs of litigation and protect you financially in the event of the court ruling against you.
Who is it not for?
Unless you are a member of a trade body that insists on public liability insurance, the policy is optional. If your business does not bring you into contact with members of the public or the service you provide is informational only, you may not need the cover. However, the cost of the insurance in this case is likely to be nominal and could be useful additional protection.
